Hiatus Kaiyote - Molasses - (Nai Palm, Perrin Moss) Commentary lyrics

Artist: Hiatus Kaiyote

album: Choose Your Weapon (Track by Track Commentary)

Molasses is kind of a breakup song, but I didn't wanna like
I didn't wanna wallow it in my suffering, because the thing is
When you document that, and then you overcome it
And then you have to perform it, over and over again
You're basically, like, opening up a wound
And so, it was like a spell, on myself, to
Write a breakup song from the perspective of how I would be
In the long term and most relationships, like
Anything traumatic that happens to you, you can
You learn something from it and then, you know
It makes you who you are and
So, I wanted to write from that place, like who I w-, who I would be
And what I would've gained and learned from that relationship, so
It's a really positive song
And it was to kinda get myself out of this funk, that I was in
There's many layers to it, lyrically
The reason we make music is to enhance the emotional state of people
Whatever emotion that is, and so, y'know, the more multi-layered you make it
The more people can find a way to interact with it
When we were, uhm, experimenting with recording or the tracking and stuff, we, uh
Decided to do a couple more where it was like, a bit more, as one, from start to finish
Playing it exactly how we would play it live
And one track in Molasses, we recorded in a friend's studio, Damien Charles
And, yeah, we just decided to go from start to finish
So, at this point, we kind of got, got the, um, the technique down of, like
Really isolating each component of the, of the songs, because like
The first couple o' takes that we did there, or anywhere we tried to record in the same room
Whe-, were really, really difficult, was of the bleed and stuff
But, we managed to achieve that on Molasses and when
When I got the files back at home, and it was like, listening to like
Soloing every components of the track, actually was, pretty much
Complete isolation, which made the vibe from the song, from start to finish
Really cool, 'cause we had this, like, old-school sound, we all played it together
And it was a really rewarding thing, and there was no bleed to fuck around with
So, you kinda had a lot of freedom within the sounds of that as well
