Hiatus Kaiyote - Building a Ladder - (Nai Palm) Commentary lyrics

Artist: Hiatus Kaiyote

album: Choose Your Weapon (Track by Track Commentary)

"Building a Ladder" is like a feel-good song
I like to write positive music when I feel shit
Because it gets you out of it and it also
It's almost like you undergo suffering
For the sake of other people in a sense
And it's like other people are feeling how I'm feeling
So, how would I want to help them?
If I wanted someone to help me, what would I do?
Essentially so I would project, I project that, that out
Because it's like, I don't know
When people are suffering, like it's
It's good to overcome things via empathy
But at the same time, you want to be uplifting for people
A lot of music is that for me
A lot of music has helped me through my life
So it's like I feel like I, as a musician, being part of that lineage, I, I
You know, it's my duty, you know?
I can be a sanctuary for other people
Just like music has been for me
Yeah, "Building a Ladder" is
I was suffering at that time and I was just like
"It will end, the suffering will end, you just have to be hopeful"
And it's a really beautiful one to perform
Because if I'm having a shit night or the audience isn't giving me anything
There's a lyric, which is like, "Building a ladder of love to you"
"And I hope that love you build one too"
And it's like just that reaching out and uh
If you do that, then people will meet you in one way or another
But it takes that first step, you know, which is the hardest step
Because when you're suffering, like
All you wanna to is be insular
You know, I'm human too and listen to Björk in the bathtub
And drink whiskey when I'm upset too but it's kind of like, yeah
It's, it's an offering that hopefully uhm, will help people, yeah
