Ailish McBride - The Owencarrow lyrics

Artist: Ailish McBride

album: The Owencarrow

On a cold and stormy winters night in 1925
The train left Derry station as usual all the time
There were people from Derry and Letterkenny too
Also, ones from Cresslough and the west there were a few
As the train reached Barnes Gap the storm it did rage
And all of the carriages were shaking on the rails
When it reached the Owencarrow the driver slowed it down
For it was heading to a valley where no shelter could be found
Owencarrow, Owencarrow your valley looks so sweet
With your winding river flowing thru your backland oh so deep
With your viaducts standing high and the storm cloud passing by
But why had four loved ones to die
As it crossed over the viaducts two carriages were blown down
And four of the passengers had fallen to the ground
There were Phillip Boyle and Sara, who came from Arranmore
And also Una Mulligan in Falcarragh she was born
And then there was Neil Duggan who came from Meenabunone
He struggled from his injuries but never made it home
When the news of the tragedy had reached Creeslough town
People from the townland had all gathered around
To help all the injured and pray for those who died
But river will keep on running like those memories will abide
Owencarrow, Owencarrow your valley looks so sweet
With your winding river flowing thru your backland oh so deep
With your viaducts standing high and the storm cloud passing by
But why had four loved ones to die
But why had four loved ones to die
