You hoped that today would be the one
Where the old troubles ended and a new life begun
A Carolina boy now a man in the midwest
Working nights as a guard just doing your best
At 46 years you were a father
Your heart was in Houston along with your daughters
The virus took your job and you lost your way
If only you would've stayed home that day
Fed up with the system like any man would be
A drink and a smoke just lettin off steam
Your only mistake was using that fake bill
How could you know it would get you killed
Forgery in progress police got the call
Arrived within minutes guns drawn and all
Fear can bring any man to his knees
A weapon police learn to use as they please
Cuz one of two things happens when you see a gun
You stand frozen in fear or you turn and run
But you know what happens when you run and you're black
You wind up with extra holes in your back
So terrified you stand before you fall to the ground
Hoping the officers won't shoot you now
But you're breathing so fast you think you might die
You can't comprehend let alone comply
The color of your skin sealed your next fate
'Cause the tiny man with the power needed someone to hate
He hated himself for the pig he'd become
Just a piece of trash with a badge and a gun
So when he saw you and his chance for power
Hearing you plead was his finest hour
Eight minutes later his knee on your neck
Your body lay lifeless your pulse they did check
No signs of life but still signs of a threat
Three cops won't get off you yet
Screams and cries how could this be
Did they just murder this man in the street
One man took another man's life
Knowing the system he won't pay the price
We all watched the murder of peace that night
And now a nation mourns under fire light
