When the whistle blows and I take my seat on the train The engine steams and pulls out from the station in the rain And the ones that I've loved Wave their hands from the side of the tracks Some laughed, some smiled but you cried Cause you knew I wouldn't be coming back The porter man that punched my ticket gave me a wink and a smile He said the takeoff can get a little rough But you're gonna feel better in a little while There's a bar at the back of the train a place to drown your sorrows And once they're gone they won't be coming back for a million tomorrows And today is the first day of the rest of your life Well the train lifted off of the ground and said goodbye to the land Like a dust cloud swept off of the rocks pulled by some unseen hand I looked down to the town far below thought I saw you waving your hands I shouted out to let you know that I'm alright Then my breath fogged the glass And today is the first day of the rest of my life I moved on to the back of the train Bartender pour me a drink now I held it high in my hand and made a toast to the love that I leave now I'm moving on from the earth to the sky you won't see me no more I'll make a place for the both of us to stay just across the River Jordan And today is the first day of the rest of your life And that day will be the first day of the rest of our lives
