Who doesn't know how to fight should never get married.
No?
I'm absolutely serious, I mean it.
If you don't know how to fight with your
Husband or your wife, you may be in serious trouble.
The point is simply this: Differences of opinion, hurt feelings,
Real or imagine slights are part of any marriage and I
Mean even the very best the very happiest of marriages.
Young people today where they get the idea I'll never know,
Seemed to think that their first falling out
Should be a signal to dissolve the marriage.
There's an old saying to the effect that when a man and woman get
Married, it's the end of their
Romance and the beginning of their drama.
Now, it's a poor marriage indeed where romance
Flies out the window the night after the honeymoon.
And that need never happen.
But to my mind the best way of guaranteeing post
Marital romance is the know how to fight and how not to fight.
The real goal in marriage is not to eliminate all coros,
It's to have civilized ones rather than
Brutal, harmful one that leaves permanent scars.
Not too long ago,
A young couple on the brink of divorce sat in my
Office, both were absolutely rigid with fury and hurt pride.
You know what's taking them off?
Well, he was mad because his wife wouldn't make him a lemonade
Meringue pie like his mother used to make,
She was ready to abandon ship because
He always left the bathroom in a mess.
Towels all over the floor, clothes lying around.
My solution to their world shaking problem was simple enough,
I advised her not to touch any of his mess in
The bathroom until he acquire a sense of tidiness.
As for the lemon pie,
I told her to go ahead and bake it on condition,
He ate every cram of it on one sitting
And never again mention his mother's cooking.
When I got through they both smile, and it was a good sign.
I knew their sense of humor would help them savage the rest of it.
You've got to get over the delusion that romantic
Love will solve all your troubles, it just won't.
Expect a few fights.
Sometimes a good shower of emotional sparks clears the air.
And then, there's the pleasure of making up.
I can't think of anything incidentally that is
More conducive to romance than making up after a fight.
