Man, I know people who have lost a loved one And that one is probably gonna hit him right in the heart But that's the beauty of Thomas Rhett and his songwriting He touches people in very personal and relatable ways And I'll never forget the first time I saw a Youtube video Of you performing this song on stage You had just written it recently And you thought you'd try it out kind of acoustically People went nuts Because not only do so many people love you and your family So, they knew that this was the song About your sweet precious daughters But I think a lot of people can relate to this song So tell everybody about "To the guys who date my girls" "Guys who date my girls" Is a song that I wrote in Alabama on The VHS Tour last year And it was me and my dad and Josh Tomson and Wilbandy And uhm, I'd had this conversation with a friend of mine And he was talking about, "Man, what are you gonna say to the guys" "That walk up to your doorstep for the first time" "And are asking your daughter out on the date, or whatever" "Like are they going to come to the door?" "Or are they going to stay in the driveway and honk?" 'Cause if they stay in the driveway and honk There is no way that I'm lettin' any of my kids To go out there and go on date with that person, uhm So it kind of sparked this conversation of like If I could write a letter to the guys that are gonna One day wanna date my girls or You know, hang out of our house Or just kind of be within our family group Like, what would I say to 'em? I'm I gonna be like the hard dad That is like, "What are your intentions with my daughter?" Or am I gonna like befriend kid or am I gonna You know, what am I gonna do? And it just kind of turned into this list of things That I wanted guys 16, 17 years old to know When they're gonna, come pick up my kids for the first time To take 'em on the date I remember we wrote that song in Alabama And the same night on this stage I played that song for this crowd And it was like the first time I'd seen Like big barley men like crying Like babies 'Cause, and they started just grabbing their daughters and just You know, I'm sure they were just like, "I love you" You know, all of that stuff And it's one of those ones that I think That so many people can resonate with Whether you have girls or not? I think that the whole concept of like Watching your kids grow up It's somewhat of a bitter-sweet thing So that really is just a conversation to The guys that'd one day date my daughters
