Yesterday, I met the girl that lived across the street Loved basketball and painting and playing in the street I always used to see her from my bedroom window seat And secretly I'd hope we'd never meet But the day we did was one that I cannot forget She walked up to my door and rang it twice without a breath I opened it, my hand was kissed, and then she said, "Hello" She kissed my hand, and then she said, "Hello" She said, "Hey, I'm your neighbor, would you like to come by later?" "We could play until the sun begins to set" "I'll let you pick the game, just as long as it's not lame" "And we'll make memories we'll probably forget" "Let's both lose track of time, when it's 9, we'll think it's 5" "And we'll cry when it comes time to say goodbye" "And then amongst the sorrow, think of something that I borrowed" "And I'll swear that I will bring it back tomorrow" "I promise I'll be back again tomorrow"
A couple years went by with the promise that she kept From barbecues to sleepovers and sharing half a bed We'd never sleep a wink because we talked all through the night 'Bout boys and girls and other things we liked Then one night she asked me if I'd ever kissed before I quickly told her no, and you know where this one goes She put a kiss upon my lips and wished me a goodnight I wish that I had known that was goodbye She said, "Hey, I'm your neighbor, would you like to come by later?" "We could play until the sun begins to set" "I'll let you pick the game, just as long as it's not lame" "And we'll make memories we'll probably forget" "Let's both lose track of time, when it's 9, we'll think it's 5" "And we'll cry when it comes time to say goodbye" "And then amongst the sorrow, think of something that I borrowed" "And I'll swear that I will bring it back tomorrow" "I promise I'll be back again tomorrow" ♪ The next day came and it was odd 'cause no one rang my door No one snuck in through the back and tried to hide amongst the floor I looked around the house and then I looked across the street And a moving van was packing up her things I ran into her driveway, she was trying to paint a bird I asked her what was happening, she didn't say a word She looked at me and shed a tear before she ran inside I never even got to say goodbye She said, "Hey, I'm your neighbor, Would you like to come by later?"
