It was hot, it wasn't humid, it wasn't gray, it was just hot The steaming kind of heat that makes oases out of sidewalks And you half-expect a gentleman Sheik to drape his cloak over the mirage These illusory puddles were everywhere We drove to the train station With the windows down and our feet kicked out We didn't need to say what was left unsaid When the train doors slide shut and the whistle blows It takes an hour for the iron behemoth to roll away And with a crack the sky changes And i'm walking in between the raindrops That bubble up from the cracks in the pavement The windows were left open All the sheet music is strewn out sopping on the floor These pages mean nothing when the dots and lines are blurred No sense in crying over apartment soup, it's not my apartment anyway After we go for a swim The water feels like jello between my fingers, on the surface is chaos Tiny craters splash on and on and Under water all is not quiet, just constant But when we emerge the hail begins It stings our bodies as the lightning strikes Every inch of skin and all points on the compass Thunder fills our ears the ice stings but it can't get us The lake protects us, we protect us
