The City of Brotherly Love has given rise to its next great producer with Jamil Marshall p/k/a Small Professor. Born into a very musically talented family, his passion for music however did not take flight until his freshman year in college in 2004, where he would tap out beats to be used for recording his own raps. After spending most of that year crafting beats and composing lyrics, he decided to put down the pen and shift his focus purely towards production. Originally inspired by the works of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Buckwild and you guessed it…Large Professor, Small Pro’s moniker is the result of both his reverence to the Main Source frontman in addition to his ‘gigantic’ five foot four inch presence. In addition to Small Professor’s solo pursuits, he’s also one half of the duo, Career Crooks, alongside South Philly “noir rap” emcee, Zilla Rocca. To date, Small Professor has released collaborative albums with the likes of Guilty Simpson and the late Sean Price, and can have emcees such as Smoke DZA, Skyzoo, Blu, Von Pea (of Tanya Morgan), Fly Anakin, Armand Hammer (Billy Woods, Elucid), Your Old Droog and more heard over his production. To boot, the Philly beatsmith has amassed a prolific instrumental series titled ‘Jawns,’ available exclusively via Bandcamp.
