Biography
A genre-busting, foot-stomping three-piece from Venice, California, The Great Escape are back with their unique blend of raw energy song craft: Self-produced in their own studio, “Universe In Bloom” sees the West Coast trio joined by some of the best musicians and studio wizards in the industry to create a timeless sound that’s both unique and strangely familiar, rough and infectious. Still channeling the crunchy, now-classic approach of their all-time favorites (among them: Hendrix, Supremes, Joplin, Cohen, Nina Simone, Stones, Beatles), but also nodding to vintagelovin’ contemporaries such as The Black Keys and The Heavy, Jack White and Amy Winehouse, The Great Escape’s sophomore effort feels like the ultimate 2017 update to that 60s-70s sound when Rock and Pop and Soul music was still raw and unpolished. “Universe In Bloom” blends heartfelt, sweet-voiced storytelling with a grit-digging vibe and feel, and it’s full of melodies that jump right at you: Here’s a band that’s not afraid to combine funky horn sections (lots and lots of them!) and desert-heavy guitars (think QOTSA) with an easy-going, California carpe diem-type spirit. “Universe In Bloom” is widescreen hooks all the way, the sonic equivalent to 35mm panoramic shots: timeless tunes beyond genre that could have been cooked up at any point in the last 50 or so years.
