Biography

A familial Canadian folk-rock troupe who combine bluegrass, country, folk, and indie rock into a sound that's both bucolic and metropolitan, the Abrams is the brainchild of fourth-generation musicians John and James Abrams. Drawing inspiration from the Louvin Brothers and the Beach Boys, as well as regional greats like Neil Young, the Band, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, and Joni Mitchell, the siblings began their music careers as a pure bluegrass duo. Operating as the Abrams Brothers, John and James, who have been performing together since the single digits, became the youngest Canadians to grace the stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Between 2004 and 2008 they issued three LPs, Carrying On, Iron Sharpens Iron, and Blue on Brown, the latter of which was a Bob Dylan/Arlo Guthrie tribute. In 2011, they released their first collection of original material, Northern Redemption. In 2015 they inked a deal with Warner Music Canada and began operating under the moniker the Abrams. Their eponymous debut for the label arrived the following year, and drew comparisons to like-minded acoustic genre-jugglers like the Lumineers, the Avett Brothers, and Mumford & Sons. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
