Biography
International quintet Curawaka invites us to explore the sonic tapestry of «sacred world music», a journey through the lush soundscape of the natural world and its native indigenous cultures, invoking deep joy and salient memories of something meaningful and profound in most of us. Curawaka has spent years living with, and learning from, indigenous tribes all over the globe. Vocalist Anna Bariyani sings in seven languages, including Hatcha Kuin, Yawanawa, Sami, Spanish, Portuguese, English and her mother tongue, Norwegian. Her songs celebrate and echo the voices of the peoples of the natural world, their spirituality and sacred practices. Hailing from as far apart as Norway, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Brazil, Curawaka are - like their music - of the world. Musicians Tavo Vasquez, Alberto Arroyo, Cesar Alcedo, Rafael Ayala Silva and Txai Fernando bring the groove, playfulness and passion that comes with their latin folk rhythms and traditions, weaving a vivid and playful tapestry for Bariyani to vocally embellish with her clear, strong and luminous voice. Their debut album Call of the Wild is a tribute to cultural heritage and folklore of peoples or the natural world, as well as an accomplished amalgam of musicianship and spirituality. Curawaka aim to arouse and summon the wilderness of the human heart, calling for humanity to wake up and unite to defend what is true, good and sacred.
