Biography

Gonne Choi, who pioneered her unique genre with her octal tone and singing style with an acoustic sound, debuted her first EP [36.5˚C] in October 2010. She was introduced as the "Joni-folk", which is Choi’s own genre that was named after legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. She was the first Korean to be officially invited to Glastonbury Festival and broke her own record by getting invited three times. Choi learned Gayageum and Pansori in her teens, performed as a vocal of a hardcore band, and taught acoustic guitar herself in college. As her musical background is variously rooted, she is not limited to one genre but performs genres including folk, rock, pop, jazz, and Korean traditional music based on acoustic sound, ranging from solo to band. She performed in various cities including Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands in 2012, as well as major music festivals in Korea. Choi also won ‘2013 Asia Versus’ in Japan, which was a competition among four Asian countries’(Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia) singer-songwriters. In 2021, Choi released a remake version of [Please Give me Water] originally performed by Han Dae-soo, the master of folk music in Korea. She has been weaving together various eras by releasing [Lovers of the Evening] inspired by a Goryeo Dynasty song and [Spring Breeze] influenced by a song from the 1960s, creating a deeper connection with her Korean heritage.
