Biography

Leo Maslíah (1954) studied music with Bertha Chadicov, Wilser Rossi, Manuel Salsamendi, Coriún Aharonián and Graciela Paraskevaídis. He made his debut in 1974, playing a Haendel concert. Since 1978 he is a performer of songs and has played in Uruguay, Argentina, Spain, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, United States of America, France, Switzerland and Sweden. In 1981 his electroacoustic composition Llanto was part of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) annual festival held in Brussels, Belgium. He published more than 40 books from Hospital Especial (Imago, Montevideo, 1983) to Literatura con vallas (Criatura editora, 2017). He edited about 45 albums (or cassettes, or CDs) of popular music and some of unpopular music, from Cansiones barias (1980) to Últimas canciones (2021), and also two DVDs. His albums Árboles and Leo Maslíah toca Bach won the 2008 and 2020 Gardel award (Argentina), as best instrumental and classical music albums respectively. LM has written music for piano, different groups of instruments, concerts for different soloist instruments and orchestra and symphonic works. He also composed an opera, Maldoror, which was first performed at the Colón Theater of Buenos Aires in 2003. He also wrote and directed several theatre plays. In 2000 and 2013 he received the national literature award in the category "comedy" and "narrative" in 2019. In 2012 the annual music award in the "jazz/fusion/latin" category.
