Biography
Jan Lundgren, born in southern Sweden in 1966, is part of a remarkable and long tradition of innovative pianists from Sweden like Jan Johansson, Bobo Stenson and Esbjörn Svensson. Lundgren has never made life easy for himself, and has always tried to utilize his phenomenal technique to enhance his musicality. His ability to integrate the most disparate musical influences into a fascinating whole is unique in itself. Whether it’s contemporary classical music, the inexhaustible northern folk tradition or the pulsating groove of jazz: Lundgren has a unique way of leading the listener through a journey of discovery by the means of his highly individual soundscapes. He combines a light touch, a bright phrasing and extraodinary conciseness. He performs in a smooth way which is taut as well as it is astonishingly relaxed. On top of a genuine technique, he relies on intensity and may be rightly designated as an „accomplished instrumentalist“. For Jan Lundgren, „improvisation is a way of living, it’s a language with a myriad of nuances“. „It’s about following one’s impulses, utilising the dynamics we all have inside of us. At he end of the day it is about daring to be oneself. The most important thing for Jan Lundgren is to be able to express himself in his music as the person he is. Jan Lundgren is an exclusive ACT artist and Steinway endorser. Beside Paolo Fresu and Richard Galliano, Jan Lundgren is a member of the reknown European supergroup Mare Nostrum.
