Biography
Growing up in Haynesville, LA Highway Yella started his music career as Yellow Boy, the Playaland Boss. At the age of 14, Nicholas Brown saw music as a way to vent about the struggle of having big dreams in “Small Town America”. After several trips to Houston, Yella found himself inspired by legendary artists such as Pimp C of UGk, ESG, Lil Flip and the sounds of Swishahouse. During this point of his early career, Yella began to create & forge his lyrics, delivery & freestyles that are still a key component in his music. Well-known for his freestyle abilities he credits studying Houston freestyle legends ESG & Lil Flip. Yella is often compared to the late great Pimp C due to their resemblance to each other. While touring the U.S. in 2013 for various appearances and performances, Yellow Boy was inspired to change his stage name to “Highway Yella” due to his constant traveling. After his release of several mixtapes, Yella garnered the attention of the legendary DJ, Michael “5000” Watts. After several joint releases and ventures, the two formed a bond that would span over half a decade. In late 2018, Yella fulfilled a childhood dream and formed a joint partnership with Michael Watt’s Houston based hip-hop label, Swishahouse and his label Playaland Entertainment to release music.
