Biography
Play School is an award-winning Australian educational television show for children produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It is the longest-running children's show in Australia, and the second-longest-running children's show in the world. Since its initial broadcast on July 18, 1966, Play School has been entertaining preschoolers, providing them with new experiences and learning opportunities through music, crafts, stories, games, ideas and information. Play School aims to encourage a child to wonder, to think, to feel and to imagine. An estimated 80% of Australian pre-school children under six watch the programme at least once a week. Some of the longest-serving and most notable presenters include Don Spencer, Benita Collings, John Hamblin, Alister Smart, Noni Hazlehurst, John Waters, Justine Clarke, Simon Burke, and Jay Laga’aia. Music has always been a central part of Play School, with performances of unforgettable versions of classic children’s songs such as ‘Hokey Pokey’, ‘Do Your Ears Hang Low?’, ‘Shake My Sillies Out’, ‘Heads and Shoulders’, ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’, ‘Bear Hunt’, many more. In 2006, Play School was admitted to Australian Television's Logies' Hall of Fame. In 2017, Play School’s iconic theme song ‘There’s A Bear In There’ was added to the National Film and Sound Archive’s ‘Sounds Of Australia’ archive, which preserves songs from that are deemed culturally, historically or aesthetically significant for the nation.
