Biography
The name Jellyfish Brigade comes from two books I was reading at the time. In Ishmael, the gorilla explains the creation myth of mankind by telling a story of a prehistoric jellyfish detailing how the world came to be. In Wind-Up Bird Chronicles, the protagonist’s wife explains to him that jellyfish live in their own world within our world, and that there are many worlds within our world. For some reason, those ideas really hung with me. When Jeff, aka The Great Mundane, asked what we should be called, I threw out, “Jellyfish Brigade”, and Jeff was like, “Yeah. That’s it.” So between 2011 and 2014, we released four projects. We made songs about rivers, mountains, insecurities, finding one’s self, and gaining and losing loved ones. And then we stopped. And I started teaching and got married and bought a house, spending my hours in school and in the garden. And Jeff got married and moved to the mountain, living in a bus and exploring white water rapids and cliff faces before copping his own crib. We’ve grown up a lot, but we’re still very much the same folks. Same track. Different lap. Now, here we are. Ready to release new songs and eventually a new album. It’s all pretty different from our past stuff, but it still feels Jellyfish Brigadeian, which is to say, it feels like there’s a love for things worth loving, a dedication for things worth defending, and hope for things worth changing.
