Biography
Saravah Soul is a half-Brazilian, half-British collective that plays a hybrid music they call Afro-Brazilian funk. Founded by frontman, vocalist, and break dancer Otto Nascarella (aka Nasca) in 2005, who moved to London from Sao Paulo in order searched its dance music underground for players who would share his vision. He sought to create a modern music music that revisited and reflected the deep influence of late-'60s Brazilian soul-funk and uptempo samba. Eventually he found like-minded musicians in drummer Eduardo Marques, bassist Matheus Nova, guitarist Kiris Houston, percussionist Jack Yglesias, trombonist Chris Webster, saxophonist Marcelo Andrade, and trumpeter Graeme Flowers. Most members share backing vocal duties and are multi-instrumentalists as well. The band began garnering a a following based on their marathon, high energy live shows, and were eventually signed by Great Britain's Tru Thoughts who issued their first single “Nao Posso Te Levar a Serio” ("I Can't Take You Seriously"). It was a club smash that bubbled up to the mainstream. Major labels came calling but the band remained with Tru Thoughts and issued their self-titled debut in 2008 to massive critical acclaim. The band's second single, "Alforia," was a digital-only release issued in May of 2010, as a precursor to its second full-length, Cultura Impura, that followed in July of that year. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
