Biography

b. 1989, Nottingham, England. Guitarist and singer-songwriter Notman was one of several young musicians to make their mark on the UK folk scene in the late 00s. After learning guitar and piano at an early age, she began playing live sessions at Mansfield Folk Club while still in her early teens. She studied music while completing her A-levels at Bilborough College, where she also began performing with fellow student Bryony Bainbridge. The duo reached the finals of the BBC Young Folk Award 2007 and earned several other encouraging notices for their accomplished musicianship. Notman steadily built a solo reputation with extensive touring and festival appearances, and completed her debut album Threads with the help of fellow young musicians Bella Hardy, Saul Rose and Hannah Edmonds. The album, which was released on the Mrs Casey label at the end of 2007, featured some inventive arrangements of folk classics including Richard Thompson’s ‘Farewell, Farewell’ and Dougie MacLean’s ‘Caledonia’, alongside impressive original material such as the haunting ‘Fause Fause’.
