Biography
Classically trained harp player Kim Robertson has made her greatest mark since turning her attention to the Celtic harp. In addition to recording several memorable solo albums, Robertson has published seven books of Celtic harp arrangements and two instructional videos. Her discography includes several meditative musical tapes recorded with vocalist and Kundalini Yoga student, Singh Kaur. Robertson had little contact with Celtic music until the mid-'70s. Although she owned a small Celtic harp and subscribed to Folk Harp Journal, she didn't become absorbed by the harp's folk tradition until attending a harp workshop, hosted by Christina Tourin, Derek Bell of the Chieftains, and pedal harp teacher and historian Roslyn Rensch, in Vermont. Inspired by the workshop, she began to explore the full range of Celtic harp music. Although she mastered the classic repertoire, her understanding of improvisation enabled her to expand on the instrument's traditional role. Studying piano at the age of eight, Robertson switched to the pedal or orchestral harp during her senior year of high school. Enrolling in college as a music major, Robertson switched to the French department. She spent two years in France as part of a study-abroad program. Moving to Santa Barbara, CA, in 1979, Robertson quickly attracted attention with her innovative playing. Her debut album, Wind Shadows, masterfully combined traditional Irish tunes and original compositions. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
