Biography
Ex-Girlfriend was the debut act of Full Force's Forceful Records distributed by Reprise Records/ WEA. The quartet was introduced to the Brooklyn-based six-man songwriting/ production team by Yvette Shure of Black Beat Magazine. New Yorkers Tisha Hunter, Stacy Francis, Monica Boyd and Julia Roberson were given the surname of X, as a part of Full Force's concept for the group, that of "female militarism." Their debut single, the percolating "Why Can't You Come Home" went to #5 R&B and #78 Pop on Billboard's charts in spring 1991. The follow-up, "You (You're The One For Me)" made it to number 35 R&B in late 1991. Their debut LP, X Marks The Spot peaked at number 37 in summer 1991. Besides the singles, other album highlights were the sensuous ballad, "With All My Heart," "S.O.S," the catchy "Fellas In The Area," the funky midtempo "Don't Knock At My Door" and their gender-bender cover of the classic ballad "I Found That Girl," the radio-aired B-side of the Jackson 5's "The Love You Save" called "I Found That Guy," the lights-out slow jam, "I Love My Man" and a remake of Unlimited Touch's '80s dance hit, "Searching to Find the One." They also sang background vocals for fellow Full Force-produced singer Cheryl Pepsii Riley on her cover of Aretha Franklin's hit , "Ain't No Way," which charted number 45 R&B in fall 1991. ~ Ed Hogan, Rovi
