Biography

Sanggar Kirana Gamelan Group was established in 2002 to promote Malaysia culture, develop traditional music and instill arts and music skills among varsity student. The ensemble consists of 30 students from Engineering and Technology Faculty from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) under the baton of Zaidin Mohd Nor and Teuku Umar Illany Teuku Iskandar. Since its inception, the team has been involved in performances and events for the university, PETRONAS and the state government. It participated in national competition and international showcases in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2006; Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2008; Bandung, Indonesia in 2011; London & Nottingham, United Kingdom in 2015; Solo, Indonesia in 2018 and Cheonan, South Korea in 2018. The ensemble’s first music album, Gatra Pertama, was launched in 2013. It is the first ever gamelan album produced in Malaysia by university students. In 2017, Sanggar Kirana launched their second album called Gatra Kedua.
