Biography
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, four-piece outfit Lowtide take inspiration from the original shoegaze scene that grew out of the late '80s in the U.K. and that was spearheaded by the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride. Originally formed in the mid-2000s under the name Three Month Sunset, Gabriel Lewis (guitars), Lucy Buckeridge (bass, vocals), Anton Jakovljevic (drums), and Giles Simon (bass, vocals) had already made a name for themselves as proponents of dreamy, reverb-drenched shoegaze before changing their name in 2010 to Lowtide. Their debut EP, You Are My Good Light, was self-released in July of 2010, and the following year they issued the single Underneath Tonight. Taking their time to record their debut album, Lowtide enlisted Gareth Parton (the Breeders, the Go! Team) to record and produce the release. The self-titled LP finally arrived in 2014 on Lost and Lonesome. Following its release, the group headed out on tour across Australia in support of the album. The following year the group issued the single Julia, a cover of a track from obscure French coldwave outfit Asylum Party's 1988 album, Picture This. In 2016 Lowtide signed a deal with U.K. label Opposite Number, which reissued their debut album. Lowtide entered Aviary Studio in Abbotsford, Victoria with Matt Hosking -- who had recorded the Julia single -- the following year to start recording their sophomore album. The first results appeared in the form of the single Alibi in August as the band embarked on its first U.K. and European tour, albeit without Giles Simon, who had decided to leave the group. Now a trio, Lowtide delivered their second album, Southern Mind, at the beginning of 2018 via Opposite Number along with the Sydney-based independent Rice Is Nice. ~ Rich Wilson, Rovi
