Biography
Awash in full-throttle fiddle, weeping steel guitar, a sprinkling of heavenly backing vocals that call to mind legendary vocal groups such as the Jordanaires, and anchored by her warm, expressive vocals, the dozen songs on Nashville-based singer-songwriter Brennen Leigh’s latest album are an emotion-packed revelation. Rooted in vintage country, Ain’t Through Honky Tonkin’ Yet is an unapologetically beer- and tear-soaked homage. But with its thoughtful, incisive lyrics and vibrant melodies at the forefront, the Minnesota native with a pure country voice has created a thoroughly modern gem. Produced by musician Chris Scruggs (bassist with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives), who’s the grandson of bluegrass royalty Earl Scruggs, and son of pioneering country hitmaker and record producer Gail Davies, Ain’t Through Honky Tonkin’ Yet follows 2022’s Obsessed With the West, Leigh’s acclaimed collaboration with Western Swing icons Asleep at the Wheel, which landed in the Top 10 on the Americana music chart upon its release. “Brennen will carry the torch for real roots American music for her generation, and she’s the best one to do it in my opinion,” says Wheel frontman Ray Benson. "Brennen Leigh plays guitar like a motherf*****." --Guy Clark
