Biography

Clap Clap Riot are a five-piece guitar pop band from Auckland, New Zealand, known for their raw and energetic songwriting and magnetic live shows. The band’s previous releases include the TV Knows Better EP in 2009 produced by Jimmy Christmas (The D4), as well as debut record Counting Spins which debuted at #1 on the Official NZ Album Chart, received a nomination at the 2012 New Zealand Music Awards for Best Rock Album, was named Best NZ Rock Album of 2012 by iTunes and saw the band shortlisted for NZ’s most prestigious songwriting award, the APRA Silver Scroll for the single ‘Everyone’s Asleep’. In tandem, their single 'So You Say' hit #1 on the NZ iTunes Rock Charts, and reached #4 on the NZ Singles Radio Airplay Chart. It was described by the NZ Herald’s Lydia Jenkin as “Straight-up rollicking, riotous, classic guitar pop”. Their second album Nobody/Everybody also wasn’t shy of commendation, receiving a nod at the NZ Music Awards and ringing in at number 8 on the NZ Herald’s ‘best of 2014’ annual album list. The release showed a progression into a groovier-landscape, sitting comfortably within the hazy stripped back vibe of the sixties. In most parts due to the colourful production and mixing style of Kody Nielson (The Mint Chicks, UMO, Silicon). “Youthful adrenaline, bountiful hooks, surprising sonics – what we have here is a damn fine pop record”, Grant Smithies, Sunday Star Times Head down in the studio since the release of their APRA Silver Scroll long-listed collaboration with Voom’s Buzz Moller, the band released their third record ’Dull Life' at the end of April. Produced, engineered and mixed by audio wunderkind Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, Popstrangers), the album details the process in keeping up with the pace of modern life. With influences and textures borrowed from the 60's and 70's, the album delivers some of the most colourful material the band have released to date. “The amazing thing about this record is that it is just jammed full of really really good songs” - Dianne Swann - Album Review on RNZ Their highly energised live shows have seen them sell-out shows across New Zealand and tour a number of times across the ditch. They band have also played alongside The 1975, The Naked and Famous, Jimmy Eat World and Manchester Orchestra and appeared at festivals Rhythm and Vines, Big Day Out, Homegrown and Splore.
