Biography
A TON OF COLOURS is the luminous new art rock offering from Melbourne’s Ryan Downey, an album that pulsates with love and curiosity. Released May 14th 2021 on Dot Dash Recordings, Downey says this is "an album about humanness - its beauty, its contradictions and our desire for connection." At the forefront of the record is Downey’s breathtaking voice - a rich baritone with a dramatic range that can shift from a rumbling purr up to a vulnerable crescendo, recalling the all-terrain vocals of Bryan Ferry and David Bowie. He enlisted award-winning Canadian-Australian producer Burke Reid (Julia Jacklin, Courtney Barnett) for this record, who brought a saturated, electrifying heft to the production, that hits deep and is genuinely emotional, saluting recent re-defining guitar records by artists like Big Thief and Anna Calvi. Following invitations to tour nationally and abroad, with artists like Middle Kids, Marlon Williams, Sarah Blasko and Emma Louise, sold out headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and performances at Falls Festival, MONA, BIGSOUND and The Melbourne Recital Centre, A TON OF COLOURS is the first full-length release since Downey's 2018 Australian Music Prize nominated 'Running'. A TON OF COLOURS heaves, flickers and radiates with a powerful tenderness. It’s open, adventurous and wants to take you with it.
