Biography
Spanish indie pop act Linda Guilala have continuously explored new sonic directions while refining their style of catchy yet deeply introspective songwriting, with lyrics focusing on subjects like social anxiety, alienation, and self-doubt. The band's first album, 2009's Bucles Infinitos, was influenced by pop-punk as well as the electronic pop of the 1980s. Their sound gradually became denser, heavier, and spacier, and their second album, 2016's Psiconáutica, was a sprawling, ambitious set alternating between searing noise-pop tunes and atmospheric instrumentals. Named after the Godzilla-like monster at the center of the Japanese film The X from Outer Space, Linda Guilala were founded by Iván González and Eva M. López, both former members of the more punk-influenced band Juniper Moon. They officially came into being in 2005, after Juniper Moon disbanded, and the duo wasted no time in recording a handful of demos. Several of these songs found their way onto a number of Spanish radio stations over the next few years, notably on Spain's Radio 3 and the U.K.'s Radio Nowhere. Linda Guilala's debut full-length, Bucles Infinitos (Infinite Loops), was released on Elefant Records in 2009. Two years later, the duo returned with Paranormal, an EP containing four poppy songs about the supernatural. Guitarist Bruno Mosquera joined Linda Guilala for their 2014 EP Xeristar, which took their sound into a darker, noisier realm while still remaining upbeat and catchy. In 2016, the group released their most ambitious and experimental album yet, the 20-track Psiconáutica. The remix album Linda Guilala Reworked by Apenino appeared in 2017. Mari Vázquez replaced Mosquera beginning with 2018's "Primavera Negra," and the band continued releasing singles on Elefant as well as labels like Sonic Cathedral and Test Pattern Records. The 2020 compilation Espacio de Tiempo (2009-2019) summed up the first decade of the band's career. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi
