Biography
Ever since he started his solo career fifty years ago, the Swedish singer/guitarist Rolf "Roffe" Wikström has been established as one of the top blues artists and guitarists in Scandinavia. Since the early 70s, he has released more than 30 albums, written more than 400 songs, and made more than 7000 concerts. Though largely unknown outside of the Nordic countries he’s the only non-English singing artist included in the Virgin Blues Encyclopedia and has had favorable reviews in Down Beat Jazz magazine a.o. Rolf Wikström has been awarded many major music and cultural awards both for his music and for his engagement and stand for equality and human rights. His first solo album Sjung svenska folk (Sing Swedes!) was recorded in 1974 and since then he has led his own band, first as Rolf Wikström’s Hjärtslag and since 1989 solely under his own name. Rolf Wikström sings in Swedish, self-penned songs in the blues tradition but rooted in the Nordic society like Charley Patton et al are rooted in an Afro-American context. He has also composed and sung lyrics by Sweden’s most beloved poet Nils Ferlin on two albums as well as other Swedish poets. Rolf Wikström is currently working on a new album to be released in 2023.
