Biography

Smushie is a Chicago-based solo project fronted by Long Island-bred songwriter/producer Austin Koenigstein. With loose lyrical verve and a deft analog touch, Koenigstein’s songs carry a ‘70s-style backbeat, conveying sincere and hopeful imagery in the company of dark themes and crude playground humor. On his 2023 debut LP, Doofus Casanova, Smushie delivers rich harmonies, dynamic alter-egos, and colorful hooks, drawing the listener into a cartoonish world of desire and unintended chaos. As a performer, he is known for putting on kinetic and one-of-a-kind rock shows with an ensemble of Chicago’s finest musicians. In addition to Smushie, Austin is a co-founder of Berta Bigtoe.
