Biography
Cheap Perfume prove that you can simultaneously smash the patriarchy and have a good time. They’re fun. They’re angry. They’re dirty, foul-mouthed and unapologetic. Through lyrics written by frontwomen Stephanie Byrne and “Jane No,” Cheap Perfume explore topics of feminism, equality, sex, relationships, partying, violence and politics. The band released its second full-length album, “Burn It Down,” in November 2019, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2016’s “Nailed It.” Catchy pop-punk songs about faux feminists and the band’s “collective drinking problem” are bookended by darker and screamier tracks about surviving assault. The album also includes a new recording of Cheap Perfume’s anti-fascist anthem, “It’s Okay (to Punch Nazis),” which was released as a single in 2017. Stephanie’s shout-singing and playful/aggressive stage presence excite and empower crowds who come to see Cheap Perfume perform live. While Jane plays her Fender Strat she’s been attached to since age 15, she sings melodies that balance Stephanie’s sass-talk. David “Hot Dave” Grimm’s heavy drumming and Geoff Brent’s powerful bass lines deliver straight-up punk rock that’s influenced by riot grrrl, hardcore and surf punk. Through their performance art and albums, Cheap Perfume are creating space for womxn to boldly take up.
