Biography
Childhood formed in 2011 when Londoners Ben Romans-Hopcraft and Leo Dobsen met at University and began writing together. The duo built a band around a swelling catalogue of dub-charged, psychedelic songs, and began playing regularly with Jonny Williams and Dan Salamans completing the line up. Not long after they were signed to Marathon Artists’ imprint House Anxiety, then released and toured their debut album ‘Lacuna’. ‘Lacuna’ was a deep dive into swirling pools of shoegazing-like sound that surfaced into hazy sunbursts of choruses, shimmering guitars and dazed dream pop. Latest album ‘Universal High’ is a different beast altogether. For the band’s sophomore release, bandleader Ben reinvented their sound, steering them into the warm waters of sun-drenched soul. Locking himself away with his Mum’s record collection, he began dissecting songs, and putting them back together in his own image. The result is a collection of songs that gently traces its finger across classic sounds of Curtis Mayfield, Shuggie Otis and The Isley Brothers, then slips into slick rare groove sensuousness, sharing the magpie eye of MF Doom. Childhood, now joined Thomas Tomaski (replacing Dan Salamans) and Max Danieli-Fantin, decamped to Atlanta, USA, to record ‘Universal High’. It was produced by the legendary Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter), and released to critical acclaim in 2017.
