Biography

Los Angeles born-and-raised Rhys Langston grew up in a multicultural household with working actor parents. With his family encouraging a lifelong love of the arts, he demonstrated profound abilities in the visual arts and creative writing as a young child. Yet, he would come to his musical expression late in adolescence. Since 2014 he has released 15 projects which stretch beyond genre and even the musical medium itself. They have earned wide acclaim, exploring topics like race and ethnicity through a semi-autobiographical lens, culture and technology with the erudition of an essayist, and bookish esoterism beside an aloof cool. Notable works include the self-produced Language Arts Unit, which arrived in 2020 with a 104 page book that dissected rap and race in a long form lyric essay. Grapefruit Radio arrived two years later in similar fashion—with an 88 page paperback that cohered his visual art and absurdist prose beside the full album lyrics. These earned him nods from The NY Times, The LA Times, Bandcamp, SPIN, STEREOGUM, DJ Booth, and more. Wider range and idiosyncratic edge can be noted on other projects, like 2021’s burst of punk rock invective Stalin Bollywood, 2019’s visual EP The T.C. Wash Suite, and his production work on outsider artist Andrew Mbaruk's 2023 Affect Theory and the Text-to-Speech Grandiloquence. Ever preparing new projects for release, he remains the poet laureate of his living room, with a higher vertical leap than your favorite rapper.
