Biography
After more than 20 years of making music, the Alabama-born-and-raised preacher’s son has found his voice in the old funk and soul foundation of the 1970s that first inspired him as a young bassist turned award-wining songwriter. Alvin Garrett’s vocal tone along with his spoken-directly-from-the-heart lyrics have garnered him comparisons to the likes of Al Green and Sam Cooke. Take one listen to his hit song, “By Myself,” and you’ll immediately understand the comparison. His most recent EP, The Awakening, is an instant soul classic that grabs you and holds you from beginning to end. As an R&B and gospel songwriter, he has penned lyrics for Joe, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Johnny Gill, Rubben Studdard, Noel Gourdin, Jordan Knight, Jarvis, Deitrick Hadden, Trin-I Tee 5:7, and many others. So far, he’s earned a Grammy Nomination, Soul Train award, Dove, and Stellar Award. Garrett’s 2012 debut album, Expose Yourself, was critically acclaimed as one of the sexiest R&B albums of our time. In 2015, Garrett truly stepped forward with the inspirational soul single, “By Myself.” Garrett says “With this song, I found my freedom as an artist. I want to be the voice you listen to when you need musical inspiration.” His second album, This HILL (which stands for hope, inspiration, love and loss), was an introspective homage to the lessons learned up until that point in his career. “Because of hope, I have the inspiration to pursue what I love at the risk of loss,” Garrett says. #KeepClimbing
