Biography
Josh Kaufman is a soulful vocalist with a bent toward earthy, R&B-influenced pop. A regular on the Indianapolis music scene, Kaufman is best known for winning the sixth season of NBC's vocal competition The Voice. A native of Florida, Kaufman began performing in his youth and by age six was playing piano at his church. In 1990, Kaufman moved with his family to Blacksburg, Virginia, where he attended high school and sang in the choir. At 16 he competed unsuccessfully on Star Search, but the experience piqued his interest in pursuing a singing career. After high school, Kaufman attended both Anderson University and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, where he eventually graduated. In 2010, Kaufman formed the soul band the New Etiquette, who began performing around Indianapolis. In 2012, they released a self-titled, six-track EP. Besides playing music, Kaufman is married with three children and works days as an SAT prep tutor. In 2014, Kaufman auditioned for and won a spot on NBC's The Voice with his rendition of George Michael's "One More Try." During his time on the show, he competed as a member of both Adam Levine's team and Usher's team. A Voice fan favorite, Kaufman's rendition of Sam Smith's "Stay with Me" topped the digital charts. In May of 2014, Kaufman beat out Jake Worthington and Christina Grimmie as the winner of The Voice. Following his win, an album of his performances, The Voice: The Complete Season 6 Collection, was released on Republic Records. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi
