Biography
Centered on the surreal chanted and half-sung poetry of Mike Doughty (often billed as M. Doughty), who, inspired by A Tribe Called Quest, the NYC nightclub Giant Step, and 90s avant-garde music, invited musicians who regularly played the Knitting Factory (then an experimental-jazz club on Houston St), where he worked the door, to make his ideas come alive. In 1992, Soul Coughing solidified around a lineup that went on to record three albums for the Warner Bros imprint Slash: Doughty, the upright bassist Sebastian Steinberg (later a key collaborator on Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters), keyboardist M’Ark De Gli Antoni (who would go on to score Werner Herzog’s Into the Abyss), and Yuval Gabay on drums.
