With his glowing blond hair and voluble, outgoing personality, Carlos Vara does not come across as someone who struggles with insecurity. But his music — soul-powered songs about self-doubt, loneliness, and thwarted romantic love — belies his cheerful exterior. “If you ask any of my friends, I’m known for being a loud, rambunctious, happy person,” the 21-year-old singer and songwriter says. “But writing is my way of diving into how I really feel. I can be such an extreme person — I’m either really low and fearful or really bold and not afraid of anyone. My personality is like, ‘Insecure, but will fight you,’” he adds with a laugh. “And I think the music really shows that. I describe it as ‘millennial-meets-antidepressant-meets-modern classic.’”
