Biography
Formed in New Zealand and now based in Nashville TN, South for Winter’s sound is as eclectic as the band's origins. Composed of Colorado native Dani Cichon, New Zealander Nick Stone, and Michigander Alex Stradal, the three multi-instrumentalists and songwriters combine elements such as cello, guitar, mandolin, and three-part harmonies into a genre-bending sound often compared to acts like The Civil Wars, The Dead South, Poor Man's Poison, and Delta Rae. South for Winter recorded their debut album Luxumbra with GRAMMY-awarded producer Matt Leigh (Willie Nelson, Sister Sadie). Luxumbra’s release, coupled with the band's head-turning live performance, has landed them accolades such as Semi-Finalist in the 2023 International Songwriting Competition, Finalist in the 2023 International Acoustic Music Awards, Top DJ Pick by John Platt of NYC’s WFUV, and Most Wanted Emerging Artist at Falcon Ridge Festival. Their music has been praised by sites such as American Songwriter ("impeccable sound"), NoDepression ("must-see artist"), For the Love of Bands ("a wonderful mix of indie and folk rock"), and AmericanaUK ("An ethereal, dreamy, journey...a journey well-worth taking"). The trio has now returned to the studio with Leigh for their sophomore album. Between releasing singles off the record, the trio has been touring throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Europe, performing on stages alongside acts like Rainbow Girls, Sierra Hull, The Accidentals, and The Arcadian Wild.
