Biography
Taking grimy punk and metal influences and twisting them into something psychedelically sinister, Southern California band Warish debuted in 2019 with a brief five-song EP, followed by the full-length Next to Pay in 2021. An initial wave of press rarely failed to note that guitarist/vocalist Riley Hawk was the son of professional skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, but the band's mesh of stoner sludge riffs, horror punk imagery, and effect-heavy vocals stood on its own. Warish began playing together in early 2018 in their home of Oceanside, California. The group's founding members -- guitarist, vocalist, and principle songwriter Riley Hawk and drummer Bruce McDonnell -- began jamming on fast-paced but sludgy punk ideas, with Hawk looking to wild-eyed freak rock acts like Scratch Acid and Butthole Surfers when developing a vocal sound doused in reverb and distortion. The duo recorded all the parts for a self-titled EP release, but they were joined by additional bass players when they performed live. The 11-minute EP was released in February 2019, coming out digitally as well as in the form of a limited-edition 7". Two years later, the band unveiled their first long-player, the unrelenting Next to Pay. ~ Fred Thomas, Rovi
