Biography
Following their first album, released in 2021 (Kanine, Howlin' Banana Records) and noticed by KEXP, Rough Trade, or Arte, Hoorsees reiterates and furthers its interest in pre-digital pop culture. Composed during an inevitable lockdown, "A Superior Athlete" exalts afternoons spent rewatching genre classics, from "Weekend at Bernie's" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" to "Rush Hour 3." Using phlegm as a motif, this new album investigates the relationship between athletic fantasy and the apathy of domestic life. The lyrics revive technicolor images of a banal daily life paced by illusions – the kind you learn about in movies. Summoning the ghost of Randy Newman and his natural nonchalance, Alex's voice effortlessly carries pop melodies that sound like paltry anthems, as a supporter singing in an empty stadium. This opus, self-recorded somewhere in the French mountains', offers a post-modern melting pot of what shapes the band's identity. The tracks alternate and answer each other while forming a decor, that of an apartment lit by a television zapping continuously to the sound of Jonathan Richman, Pavement, or Weezer's Blue album. Building on the foundation of its first album, Hoorsees depicts the bizarre spectacle of the ordinary and scores its most memorable touchdown.
