Biography
Bio Ritmo is recognized around the world as one of the most intriguing and influential Latin dance bands of the last two decades. They have helped pioneer a new generation of musicians that thrive on the spirit of experimentation that once defined the Afro-Cuban rooted, 70’s Latin sound that came to be known as ‘SALSA’. Founded in 1991 in Richmond, VA, Bio Ritmo started with the meeting of rock drummer Jim Thomson (Gwar) and percussionist Rei Alvarez and Jorge Negron who both happened to be aspiring visual artist originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico. The group started solely as a Latin-percussion ensemble but by 1993 it had warped into a full fledged salsa orchestra that included a mix of local celebrity jazz, punk and rock musicians. Bio Ritmo has toured across North America, Europe and Puerto Rico. They have self-released many of their own albums on Locutor Records and worked with variety of international labels including: Merge, Vampisoul, World Music Network, Electric Cowbell and Peace & Rhythm. Their music has received global acclaim, ranking in the top-ten of world and Latin music charts with critics claiming them to be “Latin music visionaries” and “one of the most innovative salsa bands of the 21st century”.
