Biography
The multi-Grammy© Winner, pianist and composer Gonzalo Rubalcaba was already a young phenom with a budding career in his native Cuba when he was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1985. Piano & Keyboard Magazine selected him in 1999 as one of the great pianists of the 20th century. Won two Grammys and two Latin Grammys, 18 Grammys nominations and EMPIK Bestsellers, established him as a creative force in the jazz world. Born May 27th, 1963, in a musical family in Havana, graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Havana with a degree in composition. In 1984 lead his own Afro-Cuban jazz rock fusion band, Grupo Proyecto. His international recording career, which includes titles such as Discovery–Live at Montreux, Images-¬Live at Mt. Fuji, The Blessing, Suite 4 y 20, Rapsodia, Diz and Imagine–Gonzalo in the USA, won Grammys for Nocturne (2001), Land of the Sun (2004) with bassist Charlie Haden; Latin Grammys for Solo (2006) and Supernova (2002). In 2010, founded 5Passion Records, recording albums such Fe (2011), XXI (2012), Volcan (2014), Latin Grammy nominated Suite Caminos (2015), Charlie (2016), SKYLINE (2021) a reunion of old friends Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette. He joined "Top Stop Music" record label, recording the Grammy-nominated ‘Viento y Tiempo live at Blue Note Tokyo’ with Aymée Nuviola; most recent nomination is with singer Jon Secada "SOLOS"-2021 Latin Grammys. He teaches in the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and CEO of Label 5Passion Records.
