Dayme Arocena – widely regarded as a modern Cuban icon – frequently compared to such divas as Celia Cruz, Aretha Franklin, La Lupe and Ella Fitzgerald. A highly skilled singer / songwriter / producer and band leader - Daymé is a powerhouse representing her native country on the world’s stage. Her family remember her as singing before she could talk. At home she was immersed in the folkloric and religious music of Cuba. She fondly remembers a noisy home, with 21 extended family all squashed into a 2 bedroom house – her mother and grandmother both sang but not professionally. Her Father was a nightclub manager and a music fan with a battered collection of Cds – George Benson, Sade. Her uncles, aunts and cousins played Rumba - Daymé describes every surface of their home being scuffed from the constant tapping of rhythms. But it was via her Grandmother that she first gained an interest in Santeria (a syncretic religion unique to Cuba) first drawn in by the music - dancing and singing are very much part of the religion's rituals and celebrations.
