Biography
Led by siblings Doug, Dennis, and Daryl Dragon, the Dragons' jazzy West Coast psychedelic rock fell somewhere between the gentle waves of Surf's Up-era Beach Boys, the smoky late-night chill of Booker T. & the MG's, and the general weirdness of the Doors. Each of the brothers had tooled around the Los Angeles scene with varying degrees of success before coming together in 1970 for the project that would eventually grant them a respected place in the esteemed rock & roll underground. Recorded in the off hours with high-school friend and engineer Donn Landee at Hollywood's Sunwest Recording Studios in 1970, BFI (Blue Forces Intelligence) was shopped around to various labels, all of whom deemed it unmarketable. One tune, "Food for My Soul," did appear on a surf film soundtrack that Dennis produced in the mid-'70s, but it wasn't until 2007 (37 years later) that BFI saw the light of day, rescued from obscurity by London-based independent record label Ninja Tune (DJ Food, Coldcut). ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
