Biography
Concerned with issues regarding authenticity and folklore research, Teca Calazans also has had noted activity both as performer and composer, having recorded works by Villa-Lobos, Pixinguinha, and old-time sambistas. Her compositions have been recorded by Milton Nascimento, Gal Costa, and Nara Leão. Calazans recorded her first album in 1967 with the marchinha "Aquela Rosa" (Geraldo Azevedo/Carlos Fernando) and "Cirandas" (folklore collected and adapted by herself). She moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1968, where she worked as actress in the Teatro Opinião and at TV Globo. In 1970, Calazans departed for France, where she stayed for ten years in a duo with singer/composer Ricardo Vilas, Teca e Ricardo. They toured Europe, recording five LPs in France. Returning in 1979 to Brazil, the duo recorded two other LPs and then broke up. Calazans started her solo career in 1982 with the LP Teca Calazans. In 1988, she was appointed to be the singer in a tribute to the 100 years of Villa-Lobos, yielding the album Teca Calazans Chante Villa-Lobos, released internationally in 1990. Calazans returned definitively to France in 1989, continuing to perform and record. ~ Alvaro Neder, Rovi
