Biography
Montreal-born folk singer/songwriter Lucie Blue Tremblay emerged on the Canadian music scene in the mid-'80s, offering songs with a strong message of peace, strength, and love sung in both English and French. Tremblay began performing as a child, playing drums in her mother's band and eventually teaching herself guitar and piano as she began to write her own songs. After winning a trio of awards at the 1984 Festival de la Chanson de Granby in her native Quebec, she recorded her self-titled debut for feminist label Olivia Records. Released in 1986, the album earned her exposure both at home and in the U.S., where the Boston Globe named it one of the Top Ten albums of the year. Over the next decade, Tremblay continued to record and tour, becoming a passionate but peaceful voice in the feminist and LGBTQ communities with her soothing music. In addition to sharing stages with major artists like James Taylor and Randy Newman, she made appearances in France, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. After two more albums on the Olivia label, she formed her own imprint, Maggie & Shanti Musique, to release 1997's I'm Ready and 2003's Because of You. Following her sixth album, It's Got to Be About Love, Tremblay spent five years collaborating with Lavender Visions Productions and P.O.P. Productions promoting breast cancer awareness, traveling extensively throughout North America by motor coach. The program resulted in the unique music video, The Breast Exam Project, in 2011. During the next five years, Tremblay took time off from performing and relocated to the United States. A two-disc compilation of her earlier recordings was released in 2016 under the title, When I Was a Puppy. A year later, she returned to the studio for Counting My Blessings, her first album of new material in 13 years. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
