Biography
Having been part of the house music scene since its emergence in Australia, John first came to prominence by winning the Victorian leg of the DMC turntablist competition…A feat he repeated two years in a row! Moving from turntablist roots, he embraced house music from the start and was listed in DJ Mag’s first ever Top 100 DJ’s list, going on to start a successful label and produce original music… One of the founders of Vicious Recordings (Est. 1993), John is the GM of the label collective that first signed artists such as Madison Avenue, Rogue Traders, Peking Duk, Dirty South, a bunch of Avicii’s first ever recordings and many more tracks from DJ’s and producers from all over the world. Over 500 releases deep, Vicious continues to release a stack of music, both on its original Vicious label as well as imprints Vicious Bitch & Vicious Black. Since 2017 the company also added Australian labels U-Genius Music and Valiant Records to the collective, with a partnership that helps these newer labels benefit from the company’s extensive experience while allowing complete freedom with their A&R direction. On a DJ front, John continues to play all over Australia. There are over one million compilation sales that include a John Course mix CD. His musical taste is diverse, often dropping some wicked underground sounds at a dark little club or working his way through his extensive back catalogue of house and disco.
