The founder of the band MYMP, and also its chief song writer, arranger, musical director, producer, and band leader. Chin started out as a singer but later learned and became better at guitar. In early 1996, he joined his fellow Claretians' band and named themselves Make Your Momma Proud. It was a tribute to Chin’s mom who passed away due to breast cancer, but also a motto that the band lives by. In anything you do, make sure you make your momma proud! They won grand prize in the San Miguel Beer National Battle of the Bands against the country’s best amateur and semi-pro bands. Chin won the best guitarist award in the NCR finals. This started their career as professionals. The departure of their lead singer forced them to re-organize, and the band switched to a pop/top-40’s repertoire and welcomed its first female singer Niña Girado, the future “soul siren” diva, Nina. As the regular back-up band of ex-South Border singer, Brix Ferraris, they started using the acronym MYMP as band name. Nina eventually went solo and Chin re-organized the band again, this time, into an acoustic duo with his former Miriam shoolmate, singing partner, Juris Fernandez, as vocalist. In their recordings, many songs written by Chin didn’t make the albums because it wasn’t fit for the “MYMP genre.” Spotify is a timely platform for artists like Chin, who are hesitant to pursue a solo career. His never-been-released songs can now be heard and shared without limitations of genre labeling.
