Biography

bb sway is the solo project of 24-year-old artist, writer and producer Ash Johnston. Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese-British mother and American father, Ash spent most of their upbringing across Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Brighton and London, where they are currently based. Ash started producing at the age of 13, having played guitar since the age of 8. Today, their diverse, memorable, and heartfelt musical repertoire speaks to the range of influences that have inspired them throughout their life. Their identity as a trans mixed-race person with an international upbringing has also contributed to their unique creative expression. Working as a session musician and a writer over the last few years, Ash has collaborated with and played for artists such as Lava La Rue, Matt Maltese, Tom Rosenthal and Shura. Since the release of their first EP, ‘cosy’ with NX Records in 2019, bb sway has since released with indie label 7476 Records, receiving recognition and support from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, and BBC Introducing (Mary Anne Hobbs, Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Gemma Bradley, Jess Iszatt). bb sway has received press support including Complex, NME, Clash, DIY, and The Line Of Best Fit, and their music has been discovered on Spotify playlists such as Lo-Fi Indie, Dreampop, Indie Pop, All New Indie, New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, and more. 
 Ash is currently working on the third bb sway EP, due to be released with 7476 Records later this year.
